The key to an accurate estimate depends on an accurate measurement if you kitchen or bath. Depending on your project, some details can be adjusted.
In General a floor plan sketch has the following.
The overall length of the walls you want cabinets to be placed
The height of the ceiling in the kitchen area. (This affects what size wall cabinets you can install, include the dimension of soffits if applicable)
The width and distance from the wall of windows (windows are counted edge of frame to edge of frame)
The width of any doors or entry ways if necessary for you kitchen design (width are frame to frame)
The width of the appliances you will have in place
The location you want the appliances to be (measured from distance to wall or another object to the edge of appliance) (for dishwashers they are generally left or right of the sink.
Note and mark any obstacle we might need to be aware of. (This includes soffits)
Note if you want an island.
List any other considerations.
Consider how do you want your wall cabinets to be installed against the wall. We usually recommend that from the top of the counter top to the bottom of the wall cabinets that there is at least 18in of space. Depending on ceiling height, your wall cabinets can be installed with a few inches of gap between the top of the cabinets and the ceiling so you can install molding on top. The molding it self can leave a gap between it and the ceiling, or it can be installed to touch the sealing making a sealed off look. You can also consider getting taller wall cabinets so the wall cabinets itself touches the ceiling.
Common appliance sizes.
French Door with freezer bottom Refrigerator: 36in wide
Most Stoves with oven on the bottom: 30in wide
Most Dishwashers: 24in wide
Other common Refrigerator sizes: 30in, 33in
Most stoves (gas and electric) and sinks can be moved a few inches left or right from their location and still be able to hook up to the gas/electrical/water line.
If you want cabinets on top of your windows, having the ceiling height and the height of the window (from frame to frame) is necessary.
If you are completely renovating or it’s a new construction, having an idea which wall and which side of the wall an appliances will go helps with the design.
If your refrigerator is against a wall to its right or left, we recommend at least a 3 inch filler or gap to ensure that the refrigerator doors will open, or you will need the pull the refrigerator forward from the wall until the door clears the adjacent wall.
Suggested and recommended width for any walkways is 36in at minimum. For some compact design that includes island or nearby door, 33in is the absolute minimum we can recommend; Otherwise, the walkway will be too narrow and cramped, might interfere with opening of cabinet doors or other appliances.
